Position Brief

In January 2023, Varys Capital launched its newest $30M early-stage, equity-focused fund, registered in the United Arab Emirates under ADGM (Abu Dhabi Global Market).

The Head of Venture would be stepping into an existing portfolio of nine companies (six LOI projects awaiting deployment), boasting a triple-digit IRR (330%) and TVPI over 13.8 (up over 1380%), and be charged with leading a multinational team with a presence in GCC, SEA, and expanding fast.

This appointment offers a rare opportunity to interact with capable founders in a cutting-edge industry, assisting in critical investment decisions and analyzing various offerings while being at the forefront of digital asset innovation.

Requirements

Must-Have

  • Must have experience venture capital experience (5+ years);
  • Must be fluent in English (both verbal and written); 
  • Possess strong analytical skills and have experience in traditional finance (e.g., hedge fund, investment banking, venture capital, private equity) and/or venture capital experience; 
  • Must have extensive experience in capital raising;
  • Must have experience managing a team or have been an operator;
  • Must possess a strong network that can be leveraged for deal flow and strategic opportunities while demonstrating skill at being a great picker;
  • Must have protocol experience (e.g., business development, engineering, ecosystem comprehension);
  • Must have some sales expertise and be capable of closing business/ extrovert personality that genuinely loves networking;
  • Understand the mechanics related to managing a portfolio;
  • Have a passion for negotiating and able to meet deadlines; and
  • Familiar with Excel and Googlesheets, and be Mac proficient.

Nice-to-Have

  • M&A or trading experience is a plus (but not required); and
  • Having a financial designation or license isn’t necessary but is a plus.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Manage a multinational team of venture associates, executing the directives of the fund manager while adhering to the investment thesis and sitting on the IC (investment committee);
  • Support management in the deployment of capital including the sourcing, diligence, and execution of high-quality deals;
  • Oversee robust deal flow while tracking investment exposure, liquid/illiquid supplies, and KPIs (key performance indicators) in addition to continuously (re)balancing the portfolio;
  • Play an integral role in DeFi and liquidity operations, working closely with the quantitative trading team;
  • Oversee market research, investment trend analysis, financial modeling, valuation analysis, due diligence, and portfolio project support;
  • Oversee the creation of regular reports/briefs (e.g., investment notes, quarterly investment reports, monthly digests, etc.);
  • Liaise closely with the fund manager to create team cohesion, capital efficiency, and expand the reach of the firm;
  • Must have a desire to market and bring awareness to the fund in the form of conducting interviews, building relationships with other funds, speaking at/attending conferences, and being in the public arena;
  • Interact with prospective LPs presenting the fund and assist in the closing process;
  • Liaise with the fund’s finance department, ensuring compliance and internal procedures are adhered to; and
  • Utilize company interfaces and repositories to maintain secure records.
